George Whittlesey letters, 1862-1863.

Written from Camp Stevens, Brashear City, and other locations in southern Louisiana to a young woman addressed as "Cousin Eliza" of Waterford, New York, during the first Red River campaign, Whittlesey's letters combine flirtatious bantering about his correspondent's pastimes and appearance with more sober reports of the activities of his regiment and the progress of the war in southern Louisiana. He describes his concerns about the strength of Union forces in the area, preparations for the siege at Port Hudson, his fellow soldiers' unflattering opinion of General Nathaniel Banks, and his life in New Orleans following his discharge from the U.S. Army due to illness. The collection includes one letter to Whittlesey from Eliza.
